Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE, noted, “The greatest use that can be made of wealth is to invest it in creating generations of educated and trained people.” There has been a major push and focus on educating both men and women. Adult literacy has increased from 54% for men and 31% for women in 1975, to nearly 90% for both today.
A focus for the UAE has been to really prepare students for higher learning while they are in younger grades. This meant the creation of certain programs by universities to attract the talented Arab students.
The education system within the country is fairly new. There were few formal schools in 1952, and in the 60's and 70's, a program to expand education buildings help to expand the education system as well. Approximately 60% of all students in the UAE attend public schools.
The government reformed the education system to try to create a better system. These reforms include: better preparation, higher standards, and improved professionalism. They also added more interactive forms of learning, as well as integrating English-language learning into other subjects.
Education at the primary and secondary levels is now universal within the UAE. Education at the primary and secondary levels is also compulsory to the ninth grade.
